Why Jenkins is more popular than QuickBuild? #3965

nini10 ·

Hi,

In the last 8 years I worked with QuickBuild and I must say that the tool is wonderful.
Before several months I started working with Jenkins and I found so many disadvantages refer to QuickBuild.
And I'm wondering, why Jenkins became to be so popular and QuickBuild not?

Maybe it is due to the fact that Jenkins is open source.

There are other tools like: TeamCity or Bamboo that also not open-source but also very popular.
As I wrote, for me QB is best tool I worked with, and I think that it suffers from PR (Public Relations). When you are searching for a CI tools in the internet QB is hardly appears, and I wonder why?
I wrote it because I want more people will be familiar with such a great tool

Hmm... we only have two persons, and never put any efforts into marketing the tool. Just put our limited resource into development and we feel comfortable...

I have to agree, I have reviewed most all CI tools every other year because my company puts pressure to change because of press of Jenkins and other CI tools and have always found that I cannot move off of QB as it is much better suited for our environment. Our environment is really complex and if you are building a simple application, then Jenkins could be fine but as soon as you get into something complex, it doesn't scale. I think many companies out there are not doing anything really complex. Just building simple apps. We use QB to build our software and also use it to deploy our environments. The ability to override/inherit steps, variables etc is really powerful and needed feature for us. It would be nice if QB could get into the comparison mix or provide their own comparison matrix at QB site, as I have to justify paying for QB every so often. We use Atlassian products so Bamboo comes up many times.

We had some discussions about why we don't take Jenkins (the young colleagues who come directly from the university), but after a new employee, who worked with Jenkins in his old company, reported which advantages QB has over Jenkins, it's quiet for now.
When I was looking for a CI tool in the middle of 2000 years there were not so many who support our old SCM tool (StarTeam) I had tested 4 CI tools and QB won and I didn't even know how powerful it really is when you are familiar with them.
And the price is not too expensive, considering what we pay for our Atlassian products alone.

Robin - How us, a QB users, can help you with marketing and make this great tool more popular?

Thanks a lot for willing to help. If possible, writing a public blog introducing how QuickBuild benefits your projects should be of great help I think.
